JMC Black Shadows and Shadows
Debuts early in 1980.
I need to exact date of first one from Jim and when they switched from JMC to K for those early ones.
At first it only came in Black and hence the name Black Shadow. Then they offered it also in Chrome. Then JMC began making it in other colors and renamed it Shadow.

Have you ever heard of the BMX rider named THE SAND MAN?
He used to ride a tricycle with one of the back wheels missing. Mr. sand man was unarguably the greatest rider of the 20th century. Many witnesses of his skills claimed there was nothing he couldn’t do.

I was thrilled to run across this site the other day, thanks for putting it on the web! My Black Shadow has been hiding in my parents attic so I thought I’d dig it out this weekend and share it with you. I’m the second owner, my dad bought it for me in Seattle in 1983. The serial number is K4442 and has the following goodies:
Race Inc. bars w/ Ame grips, Dura-Ace cranks w/ Tuff Neck ring (I still have the original smaller Shimano ring somewhere), Cook Brothers BB, Suntour XC-2 pedals, Sunshine sealed hubs, Araya 7x rims w/ Comp III tires, Redline stem (I have a 3-bolt Sugino stem somewhere that was on it when we bought it), D.I.D. chain, Kashimax MX seat w/ Kuwahara Laser Post and Suntour clamp, Diacomp brakes w/ MX Tech-2 lever.

Wow that bike is killer. Great parts. Like a time machine eh? Your dad bought you that bike? My dad said BMX was a stupid kids sport and frowned when I showed him my first trophy. Dont get me wrong I loved my dad and he loved me/ But your dad deserves mad props for that. Hope you remember him on fathers day!

It is a very cool JMC 3.1 XL
XL did not stand for Xtra Long but Xtra Light.
It was the same frame size as the JMC Short Standard so not a mini more like a Junior sized frame really in my opinion.

My survivors are #JMC5, JMC21, JMC88, JMC413, XL7295, 24C40 and 1977 no number team frame that was originally built for Josh Gersten.
I was pretty excited to find this page. I’ve owned a DY since ’90, I bought it from my cousin but have no idea where he got it. It’s a little rough, paint chips and scratches. Nothing you wouldn’t expect from 4 years of teenage riding then it’s been stored since. Numbers are DY84523, color is maroon with chrome DY forks. I don’t know about the bars though.

Wow so your the one guy that held onto a bike a since the old days lol. Congrats on keeping it all these years. I think all JMC bars have a oval crossbar but not certain. I will have to look into that.

my shadow had quit a lot of work on it ,to bring it upto the standard its at today
the rear drop-outs were pretty much shot
and the intergrated seatclamp was not even there ,,so that is a total re fabrication
then a re- chrome of the frame set , the bars are nos prior to be fitted to a previous build .
nos bullseye cranks ,,stripped and re-chromed ,,,,
and a custom padset ,,replacing the white lettering and stipes with chrome-silver
dx seatpost , jaguar aero seat ,,nos tuf neck stem ,,

I have just been given what i think is a JMC micro. Could someone help me confirm this. It has got the JMC logo embossed in back of the top tube and the frame number is M84164.

Its either a Micro or Mini. Im not sure if JMC offered both sizes. the M is for the model and the 84 for the year I believe.
Contact Jim Melton thru eBay and for a small fee he will send you a certificate showing you the who JMC sold it to, the original color, size etc. Very cool certificates suitable for framing. I got one for my bike.

I have a 1981 JMC mini – serial # M7447
i think i have a darrell young, but my serial number doesn’t match what it should be. the number is k84523. thanks.
Its not a Darrel Young I dont think. The K stood for Shadow or Black Shadow. I think by 1984 the model was changed from Black Shadow (I think it originally only came in black) to Shadow.

I just stumbled across this site and decided to find my numbers. The first on is a Chrome Shadow #K83409, the Black Shadow is #JMC294 and the Cruiser is #24C27. I was hoping you could add them to the survivors list.

OK added the Chrome Shadow and Cruiser.
The Black Shadow number looks off. JMC294 was a very early JMC and Black Shadows were not even out yet. Im guessing you just made a typo.
Also if you have any of those with Certifications from Jim let me know so I can add them to the certified list with original color etc. Thanks for contributing.

For more details order a bike certificate from Jim on Ebay. It will tell you who it was originally sold to and where and color and model etc. Suitable for framing and signed by Jim Melton himself.

Here is my ’84 DY………………I love this ride!
I have a JMC long frame large bottom bracket,i have owned the bike since 1980 or 81.The serial numbers is #1154,i contacted Jim Melton and he informed me of the bike.The bike was purchased by my sister as a birthday present from a shop called The Bike Smith in Milwaukee,WI.I am interested in selling the frame as it’s all i have left from the bike.The frame has no cracks,has never been cracked or repaired as i only rode it maybe 1yr then i got my license and the bike was stored until i started selling parts off of it but kept the frame as it’s got a personal value.Fell free to also contact Jim to verify the bike frame,thank you.

i have a jmc i belive it to be a standard the serial # is 831071 it has no letters in it can anyone help me identify it
Appears to be a 83 Standard then. Long or short you can tell by looking at it. The long has a seat stay that angles down. The short seat stay is almost inline with the top tube. Contact Jim Melton thru ebay for a Certificate of Authenticity it will tell you original color, model, who it was sold to and when. It is signed by JimMelton himself and is suitable for framing. Its the first thing I bought for my JMC find.

I have been the proud owner of a blue JMC615 long standard since about 1977. I used to race it, after racing it went into storage for many years. My brother has a white JMC, will try to get him to add it to the list also. Please add to the known survivors list!
Thanks for the info, will add it now. Just for your information that serial number is just after the one I found. My bike was made in 1979 so yours was made also in 79 just a very short time after mine. If you get a Certificate from Jim Melton off eBay he can tell you exactly when it was sold and where etc. Very cool.

OK added at the bottom as unknown since it doesnt fit without the K for Shadow. So Im not sure where it should go. Get the certificate for it.

racer thanks so much for your help, i was able to contact jim by e mail threw e-bay he sent me back my info my jmc #831071 is a long standard and the chrome is orignal my certificate will be here soon thanks for all your help,although he did not elaborate why thier is no K in serial number but it is most deffently a 83 chrome long standard if you would like to move it from the unknowen list,ill post pics of the bike when my certificate arrives,thanks agine
OK that means we now know something else. In 83 he changed the numbering formula for the long and regular standard. Before 83 they just went in numerical order. In 83 he added the year 83 then the numerical serial number. The “K” stood for Shadow and Black Shadow. Untill now I never knew that the regulars also began with the year starting in 83.

Hi , I have a JMC frame with serial number K8518 that my mom bought for me at a bike store on Sepulveda Blvd in The San Fernando Valley around 86′. It was a killer bike! Still in awesome condition too. I wish I had the time & money to restore it but I don’t. What should I do? put it up on ebay?

Yes ebay is best. You could try to sell it to a JMC fan but how will you know who buys it? I tried in a BMX forum to sell a bike at a good price. The guy bought it and just parted it out on ebay. So from now on I’m only selling stuff on eBay or locally on Craigslist.
I notice you mention that they started putting the date at the beginning in 1983. I have a JMC long with serial 82219. This one looks like my old 84 DY frame with the big fat downtube. Do you know the difference between the standard long, DY and AP frames? Great site by the way
Yes it was believed it started in 83. But your number clearly shows it must have started in 1982. To confirm contact Jim Melton thru eBay and get a Certificate to confirm when he sold it.
I dont know the exact differences if I didn’t spell it out already. That’s where feedback from people is so helpfull. People that take the time to comment and maybe measure their tubs, weigh the frame or point me to a bike test with specs. Those days they rarely mentioned the top tube length.
From memory I believe the DY was the same as the Standard Long but with steeper head tube angle. I think the AP was longer.

For sure its a Mini frame for young guns. The 82 could be for 1982. It could also just be for the 8,246 JMC made.
Ironically JMC switched its numbering system right around 1982. Its just my opinion though that its the 8,246 one made probably in 1982. Making it one of the last ones before the switch. To be certain of the date of sale and who it was sold to make sure you order a JMC Certificate form Jim Melton thru eBay.

I have a DY8535 Chrome with original matching forks in “good” condition. No cracks, no chrome bubbles, one small chip on the top of the seatpost tube. I’ve had it since 1989. I found it in a van on some property that my friend’s parents purchased. The van was packed full of parts and several frames. I had no idea that it was anything special, but I raced it at Rockford in the early 90’s. I consistently placed second in my class. It was a low budget build, but outperformed many of the “GT’s” and Redlines. It was and is still an awesome bike. My oldest son (6) recently learned how to ride and got a Trek Jet 20 for his birthday. I was amazed that even though the Trek is aluminum, my JMC weighed less.

I think 84 is for 1984 and build number 653
If Im right its a JMC Standard (Long). If it had a K it would be a Shadow or Black Shadow of same year.
Just look for the JMC Certificates Jim Melton is selling on ebay it will tell you when it was sold and to whom. original color and model and it is signed by Jim himself.

I picked up a JMC Frame before it was going into a salvage yard. The serial number reads jmc547 which doesn’t sound like most serial numbers that are listed here. I was wondering if you could tell me at least the model and year and then I will get a certificate from Jim on eBay.

Just order your certificate of authenticity and Jim can tell you all the details about your bike. Get it on eBay or from Jims new website I link to it on my side bar and in the news post I think.

I have a JMC bike I bought from my cousin back when I was a teenager. The only number I can find on it is 6365. Was wondering what year it is and what is it’s value. Any help would be appreciated.

Its worth no less then 300 but maybe more depending on shape and if its a Standard or Short and parts etc.
To get full value sell it on ebay. To hook up a JMC enthusiast post it for sale here.
Get a JMC Certificate from Jim Melton thru ebay, I think they are like 10 or 20 bucks or whatever. I got mine worth whatever I paid for sure.
I would guess yours is a 1982 or so.
I sent Jim Melton the serial number and he said it was a Long JMC 1981 Standard with a Large American Bottom Bracket. I asked my cousin and he paided $250.00 for the frame back in 1981. I might sell it. If I can’t find the right buyer I will just keep it.
I have an 81 XL. (XL7172) Have owned it since I bought it from my cousin in the early 90’s. He rode in the early 80’s. Got it certified a few years ago. It’s unmodified from when I bought it off of him, so it looks the same as it did when he grew out of it.

Great save all these years. Just so you know the XL wasn’t for a Pro Xtra Long. It was for a 3.1 XL as in 3.1 lbs, Xtra Light. Not for big riders. I forget weight limit, but like 100 lbs or something.

Hello I have a black shadow frame and fork 8051 and complete jmc k83647 curious what you could tell me about them. Have had these bmx bike since was a young kid. Never race bmx, raced motocross and have fond memories ripping around the pits with them. Will never sell. Was with my son at the local bmx park and was approached by unknown dude and he offered me a large amount of money for my jmc. I was shocked at the amount of the offer but declined. have had these bmx bikes for Thirty years. Not sure were my dad bought them never asked. He can’t believe I still have them after all this time. I am going contact Jim Melton and purchase certificates for them. thanks
JMCs command a good price due to rareness and lasting American made quality. They were race tested by perhaps the best team of its time, for sure the best team on a limited budget no question. Top racers from all corners of the USA and around the world. From micro warriors like New Jersey’s super dominant Stephanie DeFeo to Pro Icon Harry Leary and one of the smoothest racers ever, Darrell Young.

Hi Lauren, I know of the Doves.He’s brother Chris was on the JMC team with myself, Andy Raymond and Damon Bevan back in the 80’s.

Hi there, I am from the UK ! In a storage cabin at our Bmx Track, There has been a little JMC MINI in Chrome sat for years. Serial – M84189 !We are not sure on its history of how it got to be there 🙂 Its in original condition except for the bars and stem which have been replaced, Everything else is what we think has been on it since new, Even the tyres are the name that Tioga was Originally ! Contact BMXJIM on ebay. He can send you for a small fee a certificate of origin. The exact day it was sold and to what bike shop and its original color etc. Its suitable for framing. I got one when I found my JMC.
As for parts, JMC only made parts, if it was originally sold complete, it was the bike shop that would have built it up with whatever parts the rider or parent wanted or what they had lying around.

Not sure if you’re still updating your database, but I still own unrestored JMC Shadow frame and forks K84970 which I used to race here in the UK back in the day. (I’ve got a photo of me lining up on the gate at the 1987 Worlds in Orlando, Florida. So we know the frame has crossed the Atlantic at least three times! 🙂 ). I just had the certificate of authenticity from the man himself.
One thing I would be curious to know – how many of each model frame were built? I know there were 11 models and seem to remember reading that only 333 Andy Pattersons were ever built, but I’d love to know the figures for all the other models too.

– vintage-bmx-store from ebay told me to contact you with my JMC number and you could hopefully tell me about its life and where and when its was born and maybe the value the Number on the frame is stamped 831327 …all chrome
It is a 1983 model. Value is best found out by putting it on ebay and seeing where it sells. It is worth more then $100 and less then $1,000.

i have k7728 Jim says it a 1982 Shadow and that the factory color was red. Do you happen to know how many red shadows were made in 82
Just started researching these. I have a mini M84220. We bought it for our son about 20 years ago at a National in El Paso TX. Can anyone help me find out what it might be worth? Our son is now 32 and I’d like to see the mini go to someone who would appreciate it.
Minis are usually not as valuable as Pro sized bikes us older guys can actually ride. However to someone looking to complete his JMC collection or to buy for his son or daughter to race etc it has value. Id throw it up on ebay to get the most you can for it. Start it at 1.00 and you risk selling it for a bit less then its worth perhaps. Sometimes bikes fall thru the cracks. So id start it at what youd like to get out of it and not be mad, $99 or 199 etc. If its complete with good parts it could bring 300-500 maybe bit that is just a guess.

Im not sure since Jim’s passing if you can still get a certificate of authenticity from him on his ebay store. Think it was jmcjim or something.
84 could be the year and it was the 50th one made or it could be the run number. He produced bikes by numerical order till sometime in the 8000s. Either way Minis were not introduced till the early 80s. Before then they only made a long and short standard.

Sorry no updates on certificates.
As for the frame it is a 1984 model. mostly likely a Long or Short Standard. Other models would have had a letter or two to go with the number. I have both a black shadow and a long standard. The lengths are almost identical, just the head tube angle is steeper on the Shadows. But again they had the letter K. So its pretty easy to tell the difference between the short and long standard just by looking at them. Nice find.
Frame is 19″ Long so im thinking its a Long would that be right ??

I just dug my old JMC out of my parents attic. I bought this frame used at the Azusa swap meet around the 1980-1982 time frame, so it has to be an early one. I tried looking for a serial number but didn’t have any luck at first glance. I see lots of info on serial numbers… but where do I look on the frame? I spray painted the frame when I bought it, so maybe it’s under the paint and not obvious to see.
I have pictures I just took of the bike, and can post those to help ID.
I only bought the frame and forks at the time, and built the bike up from there.

Did you race it? What tracks and when did you start racing if you raced.
I grew up along the foothills in Claremont We used to ride in a few old reservoirs, along the fire trails, and in the wash areas north of the City (the area known as the Claremont Wilderness Park used to be private property of the Pomona College, and was like our own private play ground for locals), and by San Antonio Dam (where skateboarding the 14′ half pipe started in the 1970’s). We used to bring out BB guns, and disappear for half the day or the whole day. No cell phones existed, and we all just knew where the hang outs were to meet up. Fortunately, I am still in good enough shape at 47 to still enjoy getting on the mountain bike, or old school 10″ wide skateboard, or hit the snow in the local mountains on skiis or a board. The other thing we used to do for fun (which I don’t recommend today), was to hike our bikes up to the top of Clareboya, and make a fire trail run down hill on our bikes. We would keep a 2.1″ or larger front tire, and a 1.7 or 1.8″ wide rear tire, so the back tire would break traction (on the dirt fire trail corners) before the front tire. It was referred to as “riding the slide” on the mountain fire trails, with a good speed downhill. JMC527…

For the JMC survivor list… I see a couple JMC’s on Ebay right now. There is a 1983 Long Standard in original chrome, with JMC forks. The number is 83797. The second bike is JMC641 and also has the original JMC forks. The seller is out of Illinois, and shows several trophies the bike has won in recent times BMX shows.

My JMC 3.1 XL serial no. has the XL at the end of the numbers versus the beginning, does anyone know the reason for this? It reads, 7392XL. Thanks in advance.
Good question. Could have just been an error. I only list 3 3.1 serial numbers and two are your way and one the other way.
Maybe some one has a more definitive answer.
Just so you know its not for Xtra Long but Xtra Light and is aimed at smaller, lighter riders.
I have a jmc 3.1 xl that I’ve owned since I was 10. Got it sometime in the mid 80s. Still own it. Has matching forks and bars. A little rough but still straight. Serial # xl 4133.

I bought a black shadow frame and fork. Still a build in progress. However, it didn’t come with the seat clamp bolt. I am having a hard time trying to find the right bolt for it! Could you possibly shed any light on this subject for me? Thanks.

just picked up a total yard sale barn find….looks too be a race mini serial number M6112 is this a micro mini or a mini?
Well it does not appear to be date coded. The Micro Mini was not introduced till 1984, so it would have had 84 in the serial number I believe, so we can rule out a Micro Mini. The Mini came out earlier. The Justin Roos Mini appears to have came out in 1982, but the first Mini came out in 1980. From the serial number since they were sequential I can say with a great deal of certainty that is was made in late 1981 or early 1982.
To get an exact date of its sale (which of course is not the same as its manufacture date which records were not kept) you would have to get an JMC Certificate if they are still available.
It could not be a Justin Roos Mini because they were not available till late 1982. Im not sure if they had a unique code or just used the M as well. So your bike is a standard “Mini”. Congrats on a great and rare find.

I’m trying to follow the K1234. U Bering system. My JMC Racing frame reads K5988 and has a small crutch at the head connected to the elliptical down bar. TT length measures 18-3/4” and doesn’t seem to have ever had the seatpost clamp…..any understanding of standard or standard long, etc etc would be very appreciated. I’m 48 yrs old and just purchased my fist JMC ever.

Shes chrome and anodized blue fittings, even the original break pads still! Arai rims it seems absolutely original.
I’m interested in her history, as an old racer from the 80s, Today i put on some handle bars and tyres,

My JMC’s was from Fremont ca in the 80s. Its number is 3127. I raced at baylands and all over the country for Nationals. I still have it. Original white. Mint condition.. not together but have most of my OG parts. My baby.
